Report: After the New MacBook Pros, New Core i5, i7 Apple iMacs Incoming

Assuming the rumor mill’s right about Apple’s imminent MacBook Pro refresh or reboot (you pick), the grapevine’s already predicting Apple’s followup act: new iMacs with Intel’s 22-nanometer Core i5 and Core i7 Ivy Bridge-based CPUs, coming in June or July. The new MacBook Pros, allegedly to appear in standard 13- and 15-inch flavors, will also allegedly take on the slimline mold of the MacBook Air. They’re also supposed to be significantly more powerful than the Air, though that part of the rumor’s pretty forehead-smacking obvious — a little like saying you’ll get more out of an Xbox Live “gold” membership than the default gratis one. Why else would you call something “Pro”? (MORE: Apple-Guessing: New MacBook Pro 13-inch Wanted More than 15-inch Model?) The rumor about these new iMacs comes via “How To” Arena, which cites “a reliable tipster in Chinese supply chain.” I know, any time the syntax is off, e.g. the missing “the,” my “yeah right” meter inches up, but then the site claims a second time that its source “has a good track record of providing information related to Macs.” The same tipster also affirmed the slimline 15-inch MacBook Pro rumor to the site back in mid-March. As “How To” Arena notes, Apple refreshed its all-in-one iMac lineup in May last year to add Intel Core i5 and i7 Sandy Bridge processors as well as a Thunderbolt I/O port. The current selection ranges from a model with a 21.5-inch display, 2.5 GHz quad-core i5 processor, AMD Radeon HD 6750M video card and 500 GB hard drive to one with a 27-inch display, 3.1 GHz quad-core i5 processor, AMD Radeon HD 6970M video card and 1 TB hard drive. The other “feature” Apple’s rumored to be adding to the iMac is anti-reflective glass screens, though that rumor’s source is DigiTimes, the Taiwan-based news daily and tech-tattler that some bloggers love to snark for its mixed track record vetting leaks.
